Main Article Content
Abstract
Background: tumors of salivary glands are characterized by a variable biologic behavior, differente- histopathologic types, and a low incidence, which turn difficult to evaluate its prognostic factors y results with different therapies.
Objective: to presente de outcome with surgical treatment of malignant tumours of salivary glands.
Material and methods: retrosopectivereview of clinical records and pathologic reports of 126 patients operated for malignant tumors of salivary glands be tween 2001 -2013 and with a follow up of at least three years or until death. It was under taken a uni and multivarible analysis that included age, sex, localization, stage, pathology and virgin/recurrence condition, and all of them in front of two events: relapse and death. Medium follow up was 59 (1-124) months.
Results: it were included 53 total parotidectomies, 34 hemiresections of maxillary bone, 3 of them extended to orbit, 28 local resection of the tumor, 7 submandibular gland resection and 4 craneofacial resection. In 52 cases it was also performed a neck dissection. Fifty-five patients receivedexternal radiotherapy and 13 of themalso adyuvant chemotherapy. Disease free survival was 53 months and mean overall survival 59 months. In uni and multivariate analysis, both were affected with statistically significance only by free margins of surgery. Previous surgery do not influenced recurrence or survival if free margins had been obtained in surgery.
Conclusions: initial surgical treatment with free margins must be recommended in patients with malignant tumors of the salivary glands in order to offer the higher possibilities of long term survival.
