Laparoscopic approach for management of Larrey diaphragmatic hernia in an adult patient

Abstract

Diaphragmatic hernias in adults are rare, with Bochdalek and Morgagni hernias being the most common. In adults, the presence of a left hernia behind the sternum, or Larrey hernia, may be an urgent condition. These cases require timely diagnosis and treatment, which depend on the patient’s condition, the hernia’s location and contents, and whether the treating team typically performs open or laparoscopic surgery. The use of minimally invasive treatment for the management of Larrey hernia has significantly increased worldwide. We present the case of a female patient with a Larrey hernia containing omentum and transverse colon, who underwent laparoscopic repair with closure and mesh placement, resulting in an excellent postoperative course.
