Main Article Content
Abstract
Background: The laparoscopic approach for the treatment of rectal cancer is still controversial.
Objetive: To evaluate the feasibility of the laparoscopic approach for rectal neoplasms and the midterm oncologic outcomes.
Setting: Private Community Hospital.
Design: Retrospective. Prospective database.
Material and methods: Between June 2000 and June 2010, 845 colorectal laparoscopic procedures were performed. 99 of them were due to rectal neoplasms and included for the feasibility study. Patients with rectal adenocarcinoma, stages I to IV, with a minimum follow up of 6 months were included for the analysis of oncologic outcomes. 3 and 5 year cumulative survival analysis, adjusted by cancer and disease free, were performed using Kaplan-Meier method. The sur- vival was compared according to cancer location (upper vs. mid-low rectal cancer) using the logrank test.
Results: 24 patients were treated for polyps with high grade dysplasia and/or carcinoma in situ.
